The AGA Portland Chapter is a professional organization that supports the careers and professional development of government finance professionals working in federal, state and local governments as well as the private sector and academia. Our members are offered opportunities to attend educational conferences, participate in community service activities, while networking with other members from various areas of the profession.
Our Chapter has scheduled monthly board meetings in the Portland area. The schedule of meetings can be found on this website, along with the locations of each event. Members are welcome to attend these meetings to discuss Chapter activities. Please consider joining the board. There are open positions and some board members are doing double duty. The time commitment is minimal and the benefits are great such as networking opportunities, leadership experience, opportunities for scholarships to high quality national conferences that offer CPE, and free dinner/lunch at our monthly board meetings which are held at various locations in NE Portland.
Our first community service opportunity is providing free tax preparation and assistance to low and moderate income tax payers and seniors in the area through AARP Tax-Aide and CASH Oregon. To sign up and/or find out more information, visit the following link: https://cashoregon.org/volunteer/. Please let Amber Naef know if you decide to volunteer in this very much needed and appreciated program. Several of our members also participated in the BPA Regional Science Fair where middle and high school teams compete to participate in the national competition in Washington DC. The middle school competition is on February 4, 2017 and high school on February 7, 2017 at the University of Portland. I was a time keeper for the middle school competition last year and was amazed at the knowledge these very poised kids have in all aspects of science. Come and test your knowledge and cheer on these teams! If you're interested, please visit https://www.bpa.gov/PublicInvolvement/CommunityEducation/ScienceBowl/Pages/VolunteersSignUp.aspx. Make sure and let Amber Naef know that you signed up so the chapter can get credit for your participation and continue receiving the Community Service award from National! In the past we have volunteered at the Oregon Food Bank and are planning to do this again. Do you know of other worthwhile causes where we can lend a needed hand? Let us know. And stay tuned for more information on upcoming events.
Save the date! Our annual Spring conference will be held at the Doubletree near the Lloyd Center on Thursday May 18, 2017. You can earn 8 CPE at a very reasonable price and enjoy a delicious lunch and snacks to boot! We would like to gear this conference to what you would like to hear/learn. If you know of a topic or speaker that you think would be of interest, please let us know. Also on the education front, we continue to offer free AGA webinars to our members ($25 for nonmember) once a month at BPA headquarters. These are held during lunch (11-1pm) for 2 CPE credits. Please RSVP to Lee Ball if you plan to attend. Lastly, the national AGA Professional Development Training conference in Anaheim California will be held from July 9 to July 12, 2017. You can earn 24 hours of CPE for as little as $775 if you sign up early. For information go to https://www.agacgfm.org/PDT2017/
I look forward to another successful year for our chapter. But we can’t do it without your help and support! If you can’t find the time to join the board, how about volunteering at one of our community events or speaking at our Spring conference? Or invite a potential new member to our networking social in January every year. We very much welcome your ideas and involvement.
